Idona dmitrievi Pinedo-Escatel & Blanco-Rodríguez View in CoL , sp. nov.

( Figs. 1−12 View FIGURES 1 − 4 View FIGURES 5 − 8 View FIGURES 9 − 12 , 18−19 View FIGURES 17 − 19 )

Description. Male head, face, legs, and abdomen white. Pronotum, scutellum, and wings with black spots and bands ( Fig. 18 View FIGURES 17 − 19 ). Head in dorsal view narrower than pronotum, crown much longer medially than next to eye; eyes as wide as or wider than distance between eyes ( Figs. 11−12 View FIGURES 9 − 12 ). Pronotum short, weakly projected anteriorly, marked with black dots at base or without marks. Mesonotum large, with pair of black maculae anteriorly ( Figs. 11−12 View FIGURES 9 − 12 ). Each forewing with five black spots in basal half, distal portion infused with black ( Fig. 9 View FIGURES 9 − 12 ).

Female as in male ( Fig. 19 View FIGURES 17 − 19 ), but dorsal spots smaller.

Male genitalia. Abdominal apodemes well developed, large, broad at apex, extended to segment V ( Fig. 3 View FIGURES 1 − 4 ). Pygofer conical, longer than wide ( Figs. 1 and 4 View FIGURES 1 − 4 ); with dorsal preapical appendage slender, arising on distal ¾ of dorsal margin and extended posteromesad ( Fig. 2 View FIGURES 1 − 4 ). Apex of pygofer lobe with large black decurved hook extended along apical margin, with median ventral lobe ( Fig. 1 View FIGURES 1 − 4 ). Plates broad at base, and moderately tapered toward rounded tip, with lateral row of widely separated setae ( Fig. 7 View FIGURES 5 − 8 ). Connective U −shaped ( Fig. 5 View FIGURES 5 − 8 ). Style long, basal part thin, middle attached to connective with short lobes, preapical lobe rectangular with single seta, apex angled mesad, then posterad ( Fig. 5 View FIGURES 5 − 8 ). Aedeagus robust, preatrium short, shaft compressed, with paired slender sinuate processes as long as shaft, arising near base, not extended beyond apex; shorter, wider, single process, placed ventrally at middle of aedeagus, curved dorsad ( Fig. 6 View FIGURES 5 − 8 ).

Female genitalia. Pygofer with long setae, sharply excavated at apex showing apical zone of gonoplacs ( Fig. 4 View FIGURES 1 − 4 ), and sternite VII straight −oblique ( Fig. 8 View FIGURES 5 − 8 ).

Deposit: Holotype ♂ (INHS-713001), 1♀ (INHS-713002); 1♂ in CZUG; 1♀, 1♂ in CNIN; 1♀ (CAJAPE- CTD000001), 3♂ (CAJAPE-CTD000002, CTD000003 and CTD000004).

Other material. 2♀, 2♂. MEXICO: Morelos, Tetela del Volcán, San Miguel. 1,962m, 18°50’27.204” N, 98°44’46.895” W, 30–Ene–2014. ex: Persea americana ., sweep net. R.M.Quezada-Daniel [in CEAM].

Measurements. Male 2.4−2.6 mm; female 2.6−2.7 mm; head width between eyes 0.25mm; vertex length 0.22mm; forewing length 2.8 mm; hindwing length 2.2 mm; pronotum width 0.55 mm; eye width 0.10 mm.

Phenology. Specimens were collected in October, November, December, and January. Highest abundance was in December (Quezada-Daniel, pers. comm.).

Etymology. This new species is named in honor of Dmitry Alexandrovich Dmitriev in recognition of his importance as a taxonomist on typhlocybines.

Distribution. Morelos, Mexico ( Fig. 17 View FIGURES 17 − 19 ).

Host. Avocado ( Persea americana ).

Remarks. This species is similar to I. minuenda (see fig. 59 in Young 1952), I. biforma (see fig. 2 in Ruppel & DeLong 1952), and I. gigantica (see fig. 3 in Ruppel & DeLong 1952) in the structure of the aedeagus, but differs in having an additional process between the basal pair of aedeagal processes and the apex of the shaft ( Fig. 6 View FIGURES 5 − 8 ). It also differs in the structure of the pygofer processes ( Figs. 1−2 View FIGURES 1 − 4 ).
