Diagnosis
Frontal vitta brown with anterior margin yellowish; length of postpedicel 3.6 the length of pedicel; scutum with three well-defined, brown vittae, median vitta more conspicuous; male terminalia with cercal plate narrow, strongly concave and pointed apically.
Description
Male holotype. Body length 2.4 mm; wing length 2.4 mm.
Head. Eye bare. Frontal vitta brown with anterior margin yellowish and golden yellow pollinose, particularly on anterior region. Interocular space 0.4 mm. Two pairs of fr, with intercalated setulae. Orb two pairs, anterior pair lateroclinate, posterior pair reclinate. Ocellar tubercle brown, with brownish pollinosity; one pair of oc, proclinate and developed, surrounded by a few setulae. Poc one pair, parallel. Fronto-orbital plate, parafacial, and gena with golden yellow pollinosity. Parafacial without setulae. Antenna golden yellow pollinose; scape and pedicel yellow, pedicel with short dorsal setae; postpedicel grey, 3.6 times the length of pedicel; arista brown, yellow on basal third, with short pubescence, rays shorter than width of base of arista. Palpus brown, flat and claviform.
Thorax. Grey with golden yellow pollinosity; scutum with three brown vittae along acr and dc rows, median vitta more conspicuous. Acr 2:3, in irregular rows. Dc 2:3, first presutural seta shorter than half the length of the second presutural seta, but differentiated from setulae. Postpronotum with two developed setae. Pra two, seta closest to suture longer. Proepimeral setae two. Katepisternal setae1:1, katepisternum with short setulae. Prebasal scutellar seta present.
Wing. Hyaline. Calypter whitish. Haltere whitish.
Legs. Coxae and femora brown; trochanters, apex of femora, fore and mid tibiae yellow, hind tibia brownish with yellow portions, tarsi dark with yellowish pulvilli. Fore femur on av surface with a row of short setae on basal third; d surface with a row of sparse setae; pd surface on basal half with a row of setae; p surface setulose, with thin setae; pv surface on apical half with a row of setae that become longer and sparse toward apex; v surface bare. Fore tibia on d surface with pre-apical seta; ad surface with a seta at the limit of apical third; v and pv surfaces with an apical seta. Fore first tarsomere with a short and strong basal seta on v surface. Mid femur constricted on pre-apical v surface; av surface with a row of setae that become shorter and more sparse toward apex; ad surface with a row of setae on basal half, pre-apex with two short setae; p surface with two differentiated pre-apical setae; pv surface with a series of hooked setae, and one basal differentiated seta; v surface with two rows of short setae on median third, hooked at apex. Mid tibia on v surface setulose, with two apical setae, one short and one long; ad surface with developed pre-apical seta; a surface with an apical seta; av surface with long apical seta; pd surface with a seta at limit of apical third and short apical seta; p and pv surfaces with short apical seta. Hind coxa setulose on posterior margin. Hind femur on basal third of ad surface with a row of apically curved setae and two developed apical setae; av surface with a row of short setae and two developed apical setae with straight apices; v surface bare; d surface with a preapical seta; pd surface with short apical seta; pv surface with a row of short setae. Hind tibia on d surface with a median seta and a pre-apical seta; a surface with a short preapical seta; ad surface with a median and a pre-apical seta; av surface with a median seta and a developed apical seta; v surface with a short apical seta; pv surface with a developed apical seta.
Abdomen. Grey with syntergite 1+2 and tergites 3–5 on apical half brownish. Sternite 1 bare. Sternite 5 ( Figure 2F View Figure 2 ): two concave and elongated plates, basal portion setulose and with strong setae; plates joined by a membrane covered with short setae. Terminalia ( Figures 3F View Figure 3 , 4F View Figure 4 ): epandrium longer than wide, on basal half with setae of different sizes and with latero-apical, long and pointed projections; surstylus triangular, fused with epandrium, with short and strong setae, surstylus shorter than apical lateral projections of epandrium; cercal plate strongly concave, pointed apically and with long and curved setae. Hypandrium and associated structures as in Figure 5F View Figure 5 .
Female. Unknown.
Variation
Scape and pedicel may be dark yellow.
Biological notes
According to collecting label data this is a synanthropic species. It can be found in urban and rural settings, as well as forests. It is associated with decomposing organic matter such as fish, dung and poultry viscera.
Comments
Euryomma tahami sp. nov. is similar to E. carioca Albuquerque, 1956 , a species described from Rio de Janeiro ( Brazil), in having the scape and pedicel yellow. It differs in the general coloration, being brownish rather than dark brown, and the coloration pattern of the hind tibia, yellow with apical portion brownish and basal portion yellowish and with a faint brown ring. The terminalia of both species are similar, but the cercal plate of E. tahami is less sinuous, and has a greater number of setae sparsely distributed. The holotype is in perfect condition.
Etymology
The specific epithet, tahami , refers to the indigenous Tahami, which inhabited the department of Antioquia, at the “ Valle de Aburrá ” ( Colombia), type locality of the species. Noun in apposition .
