Type species

Nyctidromus albicollis Gmelin, 1789 .

Definition

The clade containing N. albicollis and all species that share a more recent common ancestor with N. albicollis than with Hydropsalis albicauda , H. anomalus , H. candicans , H. cayennensis , H. climacocerca , H. decussatus , H. forcipata , H. heterurus , H. longirostris , H. lyra , H. maculicaudus , H. parvulus , H. roraimae , H. ruficervix , H. segmentata , H. torquata , H. whitelyi , Lurocalis rufiventris , L. semitorquatus , Nyctiprogne latifascia , N. leucopyga , and N. vielliardi , or with species in other nightjar genera such as Antrostomus , Caprimulgus , Chordeiles , Eurostopodus , Gactornis , Lyncornis , Macrodipteryx , Nyctiphrynus , Phalaenoptilus , Podager , Siphonorhis , or Veles .

Included species

Nyctidromus albicollis (Gmelin, 1789) , Nyctidromus anthonyi (Chapman, 1923) , Nyctidromus derbyanus (Gould, 1838) , Nyctidromus hirundinaceus (Spix, 1825) , Nyctidromus merrilli (Sennett, 1888) , and Nyctidromus nigrescens (Cabanis, 1848) .

Comments

Genetic evidence supports the hypothesis that Caprimulgus anthonyi , C. hirundinaceus , and C. nigrescens are all more closely related to Nyctidromus albicollis than to other New World species previously placed in the genus Caprimulgus ( Fig. 6 View Figure 6 ). These results for C. anthonyi and C. nigrescens are congruent with those of Han et al. (2010), but this is the first genetic evidence to support this placement of C. hirundinaceus . Thus, it is suggested that all three species be moved into Nyctidromus . Genetic evidence also supports dividing the polytypic species N. albicollis into three distinct phylogenetic species: N. albicollis , N. derbyanus , and N. merrilli (see species descriptions below).
