ANTROSTOMUS BONAPARTE, 1838 View in CoL

Type species

Antrostomus carolinensis (previously Caprimulgus carolinensis J.F. Gmelin, 1789 ).

Definition

The clade containing A. carolinensis and all species that share a more recent common ancestor with A. carolinensis than with Phalaenoptilus nuttallii , or any species in the genera Nyctiphrynus and Siphonorhis , or with species in other nightjar genera such as Caprimulgus , Chordeiles , Eurostopodus , Gactornis , Hydropsalis , Lyncornis , Macrodipteryx , Nyctidromus , Nyctiprogne , Podager , and Veles .

Included species

Antrostomus arizonae (Brewster, 1881) View in CoL , Antrostomus badius (Bangs & Peck, 1908) View in CoL , Antrostomus carolinensis (Gmelin, 1789) View in CoL , Antrostomus cubanensis (Lawrence, 1860) View in CoL , Antrostomus noctitherus (Wetmore, 1919) View in CoL , Antrostomus ridgwayi (Nelson, 1897) View in CoL , Antrostomus rufus (Boddaert, 1783) View in CoL , Antrostomus salvini ( Hartert, 1892) View in CoL , Antrostomus saturatus (Salvin, 1870) View in CoL , Antrostomus seriocaudatus (Cassin, 1849) , and Antrostomus vociferus (Wilson, 1812) View in CoL . The inclusion of A. ekmani View in CoL , as suggested by Cleere (2010), is possible, but this study does not have data to support its split from A. cubanensis View in CoL .

Comments

Genetic evidence in this study supports the move of these 11 species from Caprimulgus into Antrostomus ( Han et al., 2010; Chesser et al., 2012), and demonstrates the monophyly of the genus ( Fig. 5 View Figure 5 ). This was proposed by Han et al. (2010), but this study also provides the first molecular evidence for the placement of A. cubanensis and A. seriocaudatus in the genus, as well as the elevation of A. v. arizonae to full phylogenetic species status as A. arizonae , which has already been supported by morphological and vocalization data ( Chesser et al., 2012).
