Type:— MALAYSIA. Johor: Rengam F. R., Kluang , Logged area , 120 m, 14 April 1971, Y. C. Chan FRI 17626 View Materials (holotype K-2008/ 0021866, isotype L-0649626!) .

Diagnosis:— Anisophyllea rengamensis is most similar to A. glandulipetiolata in flowers fascicled on longer rachis (more than 6 cm long), petals entire or distally 3-lobed with middle lobe much larger and acuminate, lateral 2 lobes minute and scale-like, or not obviously lobed, but the former has flowers all sessile, petals nearly entire at apex, and leaves with glands on petioles and both surfaces of blades as well; in contrast, the latter has female flowers sessile, male flowers with pedicels, petals 3-lobed distally, and leaves with glands only on petioles.

Phytotaxa 229 (1) © 2015 Magnolia Press • 145 Trees to 13.5 m tall, 24 cm in diam.; bole straight, smooth; slashed inner bark red, exposed woods yellow; branches sparsely pubescent with hairs ca. 0.06 mm long and glandular when mature; buds tomentose with rusty matted hairs to 0.16 mm long. Leaves dimorphic, internodes between similar types of leaves 1.2–3.0 cm, between two adjacent different types of leaves 4–10 mm; small leaves caducous, only leaving small scars on young branches; large leaves petiolate, petiole to 5 mm long, 1.6–2.0 mm in diam., glabrous and with transparent protuberant glands; leaf blade elliptic-lanceolate or elliptic, 6.5–11.5 cm long, 2.5–3.8 cm wide, base oblique, acute, apex acute or acuminate, thinly coriaceous, glabrous and glandular on both surfaces with brownish glands slightly protuberant, 0.1–0.16 in diam., 0.03–0.40 mm distant; main longitudinal veins 5–6, springing from blade base, outermost two veins rather fine, close to blade margins and one usually disappearing into blade margin if 6 main veins present, prominent on both surfaces; transverse veins numerous, sub-parallel or irregular, at angles of 55–60° with midrib; veinlets tessellate and slightly prominent on both surfaces. Inflorescence a supra-axillary spike, in serials and often branched at base; rachis to 7 mm long, 0.5–1.0 mm in diam., densely tomentose with rusty matted hairs tortuous, to 0.22 mm long, unevenly with fascicled flowers with floral fascicles 1–5 mm distant; bracts small, deltoid, 0.25–0.60 mm long, farinose adaxially, tomentose as rachis abaxially, each with one axillary flower; flowers unisexual, sessile, usually 4-merous; female flowers receptacle cylindric and ±quadrangular, ca. 0.16 mm long, 0.6 mm in diam., densely tomentose as rachis; sepals deltoid, ca. 0.5 mm long, 0.6 mm wide at base, farinose on both surfaces; petals deltoid, ca. 0.3 mm long, 0.13 mm wide at base, farinose; stamens 8, equal in length, filaments short, ca. 0.13 mm long, anther similar to filament in length; disk 4-lobed, crenulate, each at base of and slightly enclosing a pistil; styles 4, free, exserted, ca. 0.6 mm long, base conically broadened and farinose proximally, gradually attenuate distally 0.25 mm in diam.; male flowers sepals deltoid, ca. 0.8 mm long, 0.6 mm wide, base a little connate, densely tomentose proximally, glabrous distally, farinose on both surfaces; petals as in female flowers; stamens 8, equal in length, filaments thickened and compressed at base, ca. 0.5 mm long, 0.16 mm wide, farinose, anthers subglobose, ca. 0.2 mm long; disk 4-lobed, crenulate, each at base of a and slightly enclosing a rudiment pistil; styles 4, subulate, ca. 0.16 mm long, 0.06 mm wide, farinose. Fruits unknown.

Flowering and fruiting: —Flowering in March; fruiting time unknown.

Habitat and distribution: — In flatland forests; ca. 150 m. Malaysia (Johor) ( Figure 111 View FIGURE 111 ) .

Taxonomic notes: — Anisophyllea rengamensis is also similar to A. ferruginea in appearance, but it differs in its young branches and leaves with glands and its relatively smaller-sized leaves with main veins prominent on

In addition, it resembles A. curtisii but distinguishes from the latter by its flowers fascicled on longer rachis, by its petals almost entire at apex, and by its glandular young branches. Owing to limited herbarium material, its relationships with other species in this genus need further clarification. The epithet is from the name of the forest reserve where the type specimen was collected.
