Julodimorpha saundersii Thomson, 1879 View in CoL , name reinstated
( Figs. 5 View FIGURES 5 – 8 –12)
Julodimorpha saundersii Deyrolle View in CoL (nomen nudum): Gemminger & Harold 1869: 1397; Thomson 1878: 51.
FIGURES Julodimorpha saundersii Thomson, 1878 View in CoL —female paralectotype, Paris Museum; 9, dorsal; 10, lateral; 11, ventral; 12, labels.
Julodimorpha saundersii Thomson 1878: 51 View in CoL ; Kerremans 1885: 141; Masters 1886: 79; Kerremans 1892: 142 (syn. of bakewelli ); 1902: 16; 1905: 371; Bellamy 2002: 137.
Julodimorpha bakewelli var. saundersii: Obenberger 1926: 35 ; 1928: 83.
Specimens examined. Lectotype (here designated) (MNHN): male specimen ( Figs. 5–7 View FIGURES 5 – 8 ) and labels ( Fig. 8 View FIGURES 5 – 8 ): “Swan Riv[er]”; female paralectotype (Figs. 9–11) and labels (Fig. 12): without locality data; ɗɗ,ΨΨ, Western Australia, Eneabba (CLBC).
Comments. This is the species from western localities and, as above, we are unable to define the limits of its distribution. This is also the species featured in the papers about beetles and bottles ( Gwynne & Rentz 1983, 1984), and it also seems that other items with a similar texture and coloration are attractive to male beetles. The amorous male found on a piece of orange peel ( Fig. 17 View FIGURE 17 ) was photographed near Yuna, Western Australia in August 1981 by Henry Howden (Howden 2007).
