Distribution in North Carolina: Central and eastern parts of the state. Counties: BL, CO, CR, DU, OR, RB, ST, WK (material examined) and NA (in literature).

Distribution in surrounding states: GA ( Trager 2007), SC ( Trager 2007) and TN (Denis 1938, Cole 1940).

Formica exsectoides Forel, 1886 (rarely collected species)

Distribution in North Carolina: Appalachian Mountains. Counties: AL, BN and MA (material examined) and CU (in literature).

Distribution in surrounding states: GA ( Ipser et al. 2004), TN from the Great Smoky Mountain National Park ( Cole 1940) and VA ( Fisher 2002).
