Type species: Dyrosaurus phosphaticus de Stefano, 1903 .

Type horizon and locality: Lower Eocene (Ypresian), phosphates of the north of Djebel Teldja, near Metlaoui, Tunisia .

Emended diagnosis: Lateral margins of the external nares lower than the anterior or posterior margins; supratemporal fenestra at least twice longer than wide; presence of occipital tuberosities directed posteriorly, and formed by the exoccipitals; exoccipital participates greatly in the occipital condyle; palatine participates only in the anteromedial margin of the choanae; lateral eustachian foramen lateral in position and situated much dorsal to the medial eustachian foramen; otic capsule extremely large; retroarticular process extremely long and curved posterodorsally; posteromedial wing of the retroarticular process formed by the ventrally deflected articular, with its ventral margin at the same level as the ventral margin of the retroarticular process, giving an Lshaped cross-section to the process; no coronoid; seventh mandibular tooth small and located near to the eighth; well-developed hypapophyses on last cervical and first dorsal vertebrae; neural spines extremely elongated dorsally in cervical and caudal vertebrae; dorsal margin of the neural spines narrow, not thickened; dorsal and cervical centra heart-shaped in anterior and posterior view; caudal centra quadrangular in cross-section; haemal arches extremely elongated ventrally; ventromedial process of coracoid weakly expanded distally; long and robust limbs; humerus reaches more than 90% of the length of the femur; four longitudinal rows of square osteoderms; anterolateral margin of the medial dorsal osteoderms with acute or rounded process directed laterally.
