Diatrichalus buruensis sp. n.
( Figs 2 View FIGURES 2 – 6 , 7–8 View FIGURES 7 – 24 )
Type material. Holotype, male, Indonesia, Maluku, E Buru island, Ilath, Remaja Mt. , 200 m (further collecting data unavailable, Voucher Number BM 0068; LMBC).
Diagnosis. D. buruensis sp. n. is the only species with almost completely black elytra and the brightly orange colored pronotum ( Fig. 2 View FIGURES 2 – 6 ). D. mancus Kleine from New Guinea has a similarly colored orange pronotum, but has two thirds of elytra brightly colored unlike D. buruensis sp. n. ( Figs 2, 6 View FIGURES 2 – 6 ). Additionally, D. buruensis sp. n. has a slender phallus ( Figs 7–8, 15–16 View FIGURES 7 – 24 ).
Description. Male. Body medium sized, robust. Head, antennae, thorax and abdomen black, pronotum and basal part of elytra orange, rest of elytra dark brown to black, legs black. Head small, densely pubescent, with large, hemispherically prominent eyes, eye diameter 1.07 times longer than interocular distance. Antennae compressed, slender, sharply serrate, further antennomeres parallel-sided. Pronotum trapezoidal, widest at base, 1.6 times wider than long at midline, apical margin rounded, lateral margins with small protuberance at basal third, frontal part shallowly punctuated, surface with dense pubescense. Elytra 3.17 times longer than width at humeri, with stout primary costae, costa 1 reaching one sixth of elytral length, secondary costae well-developed, but weaker apically, elytral cells variable in shape, mostly quadrate. Phallus with membranous ventral part, slender, apical part with well sclerotized apical part of internal sac. Phallobase membranous and weakly pigmented, only lateral processes well sclerotized ( Figs 7–8 View FIGURES 7 – 24 ).
Measurements. BL 9.6 mm, WH 2.29 mm, PL 1.09 mm, PW 1.75 mm, Edist 0.65 mm, Ediam 0.69 mm.
Distribution. Buru Island, Ilath region.
Etymology. The specific name refers to the island of Buru, the type locality of the species. Remark. D. buruensis sp. n. and D. luzonicus Kleine from the Philippines have similar male genitalia and general appearance ( Bocak 2000a). They differ in the relative size of male eyes and partly in the coloration of the pronotum. The different size of eyes and geographical isolation (Buru island in the Moluccas and Luzon in the Philippines) support the species status of D. buruensis sp. n. as proposed here.
