World distribution. Argentina, Uruguay and Chile.

Chilean distribution. From Coquimbo to Los Lagos region ( Fig. 65 View FIGURE 65 ).

Altitudinal range. From coastal to highland ecosystems (5– 2,000 m.a.s.l.).

Biology and notes. Palpada meigenii has been confused many times with Eristalis distinguendus , currently recognized as Palpada distinguenda ( Wiedemann, 1830) . In fact, Porter in different papers (1921, 1923, 1924) recorded P. distinguenda from Chile and Etcheverry (1963) included it in his catalog. However, Lagrange (1990b) excludes P. distinguenda from Chile and mentions that it was confused with P. meigenii . Porter (1921) recorded P. meigenii visiting flowers of Aristolochia chilensis Bridges ex Lindl based on specimens collected by professor Stuardo in La Serena. Neira et al. (1997) recorded it visiting flowers of R. iaedus . It has also been observed visiting Raphanus raphanistrum L. (Ricardo Huenuanca, CSP record), Tagetes patula L. (Tabatha Carrera, CSP record) and Verbena litoralis Kunth (Orlando Montes, CSP record).

Conservation status. LC; EOO = 231,068 km 2; AOO = 116 km 2, 23 subpopulations and 26 localities.
