ETYMOLOGY. — The species is named for the infuscation across the apical portion of the wings.

DISTRIBUTION. — The species is only known from French Guiana.

DIAGNOSIS. — The new species can be differentiated from most species of Carineta by the infuscation along the apical margin of the wings. Of the four remaining species that have similar apical infucation, C. apicoinfuscata n. sp. can be differentiated from C. submarginata Walker, 1850 which has infuscation on the the apex of the first three apical cells and macular infuscation on the remaining veins separating the apical cells, C. boliviana Distant, 1905 and C. lydiae Champanhet, 1999 have infuscation that extends across most of apical cells 1 and 3 and across apical cell 2 with the infuscation across the apical protion of all apical cells, C. argentata Walker, 1852 which has the infuscation only on the first three apical cells, and C. tetraspila Jacobi, 1907 which has a small spot on the apex of the wing.

DESCRIPTION

Ground color greenish tawny. Some paratypes faded to ochraceous from green with age or chemical exposure when captured in the mercury vapor light trap.

Head about as wide as mesonotum, ground color with fuscous area between frontoclypeal suture and posterior margin enclosing ocelli extending between lateral ocelli and eye continuing along posterior eye. Triangular ground color mark between median ocellus and frontoclypeal suture and spot on posterior epicranial suture within fuscous mark. Covered with long, black pile. Ocelli rosaceus. Eyes golden. Postclypeus ground color with fuscous spots at angle of frontoclypeal suture and on anterior half of ventral surface between ends of transverse grooves, centrally sulcate, with nine transverse grooves. Sparse, long black pile on body of postclypeus, white pile laterally.Gena ground color. Lorum piceous except green anteriolateral corner. Anteclypeus green with piceous spots on corners, larger anteriorly, and pair of tawny marks on either side of midline. Long black pile on ventral head and anteclypeus, long white pile on medial gena, lorum and sides of anteclypeus.Rostrum tawny, lateral surfaces of mentum testaceous, lateral surfaces of labium and tip fuscous, reaching to hind coxae. Proximal scape and annulus at junction of scape and pedicel green, remaining antennae fuscous.

Dorsal thorax ground color.Pronotum ground color with fuscous marks along anterior paramedian fissures meeting on midline, extending laterally into terminus of paramedian fissures then curves posteriorly, extending posteriorly to ambient fissure, continuing along ambient fissure to middle of pronotal collar lateral angle. Mark in ambient fissure expands at level of terminus of lateral fissure almost connecting to extension into paramedian fissure, marks connect in some paratypes, reduced in one paratype. Pronotum with long black pile on dorsum, longer and more dense laterally. Lateral margin of pronotal collar absent. Submedian and lateral sigillae margined with fuscous producing four obconical lines, lateral mark continues along anterior margin to wing groove. Fuscous spot between anterior arms of cruciform elevation including scutal depressions, with anterior extension along midline not reaching obconical marks of submedial sigillae. Long black pile dorsally, long golden pile laterally and posteriorly, long white pile between anterior arms of cruciform elevation. Ventral thoracic segments ground color except fuscous trochantin 2, basisternum 2, meron 2, medial epimeron 2, episternum 3, trochantin 3 and basisternum 3.

Tegmina and wings hyaline. Venation ground color, becoming testaceous distally, except testaceous anal vein 2 + 3 and basal vein of clavus. Basal membrane grayish. Infuscation across distal apical cells 1-5 continuing onto marginal area and into apical cell 6 and spot on distal median vein 4, spot connected to larger infuscation in paratypes. Hind wing venation tawny except testaceous anal veins 2 and 3. Infuscation across distal apical cells 1-5 and distal anal cell 2. Vanal fold, anal cell 3 and anal cell 2 along anal veins 2 and 3 gray.

Coxae, trochanters, distal femora and proximal tibiae green, green faded to ochraceous in some paratypes. Fuscous spot on lateral coxae. Femora tawny with fuscous ventral surface.Fore femora with oblique proximal, secondary, and tertiary spines, fuscous with tawny tips. Fore and middle distal tibiae and tarsi fuscous, hind tibiae and tarsi tawny.Tibial spurs and comb tawny with fuscous tips. Pretarsal claws color of respective tarsi with fuscous tips.

Male operculum greenish tawny with fuscous spot on medial and lateral base, sharply rounded posterolateral margin, posterior margin straight, to pointed posteromedial margin, reaching to middle of tympanal cavity. Medial margin extending to middle of meracanthus. Meracanthus ground color, robust, with fuscous base, not reaching to anterior margin of operculum. Female operculum colored like male with rounded posterior margin, terminating medially short of meracanthus, not reaching posterior of tympanal cavity. Meracanthus similar to male.Fuscous markings reduced or absent in some paratypes. Opercula covered with sparse golden pile which also radiates from margin.

Abdominal tergites greenish tawny with fuscous posterior margin. Epipleurites greenish tawny, posterior margin fuscous in some paratypes. Sternites tawny. Abdomen covered with sparse golden and black pile dorsally, more dense on posterior tergite margins. Long golden pile on lateral tergites 6-8, becoming more dense posteriorly, long and short golden pile on male sternite VIII. Male sternite VIII margined with fuscous.Timbal with five long and one short rib.

Male pygofer tawny with fuscous dorsal beak and margin of distal shoulder. Anal styles fuscous with golden pile, not as long as dorsal beak. Median uncus lobe fuscous, short with rounded terminus. Pygofer upper lobe short, folded over producing an S-shape when viewed from posterior, with tuft of long golden pile medially. Basal lobe of pygofer small with long, thick, golden, radiating pile. Claspers fuscous, flattened, crossing near base, dramatically narrowing to point at apex. Aedeagus flattened, fuscous.

Female genitalia dark tawny with fuscous ventromedial margin near fuscous ovipostior sheath. Sternite VII deeply notched, border of notch extending posteriorly producing a fuscous flap, posterolateral margin of sternite parallel to anterior margin. Dorsal beak extending beyond anal styles forming a right angle with posterior margin of abdominal segment 9. Long golden pile on abdominal segment 9 and ovipositor sheath. Ovipositor sheath extends beyond dorsal beak.
