Taxonomy. Theverydarkgroundcolourofwingsisanunusualcharacterinthegenus.

Description. Wingspan 11–13 mm, lengthofforewing 5–7 mm; oneofthesmaller speciesofthegenus. Antennaefiliform, ciliatewithsetaeinbothsexes, inmalewithdense ciliation, lengthofcilia 1.5 timesdiameterofflagellum, lengthofsetaetwicelongerthan thatofflagellum. Infemalesetaeaslongasdiameterofflagellum, ciliahalftimesaslong asdiameter, ciliationsparse. Labialpalpssimilarinbothsexes, withlengththreetimes diameterofeye, tiny 3rdsegment, relativelybroad 2ndsegmentandconvexdorsaledge ofscales. Scale-hoodofvertexnarrow-based, relativelylong, itstiprounded. Profemoraof malewide. Characteristicwingpatternfeatures: costainmalesminutelyconcave; ground colourdarkgrey; subterminallinemouse-grey, quitenarrow, stronglysinuous; postmediallineblackish, parallelwithsubterminalline, inmaleangledstronglyinwardsbelow cell; reniformstigmaochreous, elongate, oval – orflask- shaped, withpalegreylineinits axisandwithblackdotatbottomthird; orbicularstigmasmallbutclearlyvisible, ochreous withblackishedge. Hindwingdifferentlycolouredinthetwosexes: infemalepalerthan forewing, withbroadinnermostfasciaandwithoutdiscalspot; inmalegroundcolourlike forewing, discalspotpresent, hardlyvisible, areabetweendiscalspotandpostmedialline slightlypalerthangroundcolour.

Malegenitalia ( Fig. 5 View Figs 1–6 ). Uncusrelativelylong, straight, itstiprounded. Scaphium shorterthanuncus, straight. Tegumenlongerthanvinculum. Saccusnarrow-based, long, itstiprounded. Juxtamushroom-shaped, nearlytwicewiderthanlong. Valvanarrowbased, edgesofbasalthirdparallel, distalpartstronglytapering; costa, cucullusandharpe fusedproducingintosclerotisedandacutelypointedstructure; costalprocessabsent. Sacculusshortandnarrow, itstiprounded, endinginthebasalhalfofvalva. Aedeagus straight, long, evenlynarrow, carinalprocessabsent; vesica (semi-everted) denselyscobinate, armedbyverylongandslender, subbasallycurvedcornutushavingsomewhatribbon-likebasalsectionandstraight, pointedspine.

Femalegenitalia ( Fig. 16 View Figs 13–18 ). Ovipositorlobeswide, angular. Apophysesshort; rateof apophysesanteriores: apophysesposteriores = 2,5: 3. SternumA7 veryshort, sinusabsent. Ductusbursaerelativelylong, narrow, membraneous, withlarge, globularcolliculum closetoostium. Corpusbursaedividedintotwoparts, posteriorpartsmooth, aslongas butslightlybroaderthanductusbursae, anteriorpartlarge, oval, threetimeslongerthan posteriorpart, denselyscobinatebytinygrains.

Diagnosis. Naardaatrata isverysimilarinexternalappearanceto N. furcatella sp. n., butthelabialpalpsoftheformerspeciesareconspicuouslyshorter.

Themalegenitaliaofthisnewspeciesdifferfromthoseof N. glauculalis bytheshorteruncusandscaphium, muchlongersaccus, narrowersacculus, broaderandlessabruptlytaperingvalva, lesscurvedandthickeraedeagus andthepresenceofanarrowcornutus.

Thefemalegenitaliaof N. atrata arereminiscentof N. notata ( Hampson, 1891) ( Fig. 22 View Figs 19–24 ), buttheductusbursaeisnarrowerandthecolliculumismuch shorter, butbroader.

Etymology. Thespecificnamereferstothedarkgroundcolourofwings.

Distribution. Thailand, themountainousareasofChiangMaiinthenorthwestern partofthecountry.
