This genus is closely related to Dacus Fabricius , but chiefly differs from the latter by the abdominal tergites not fused. A total more than 500 species are known from the Oriental, Pacific and Australian Regions except for B.

oleae (Rossi, 1790) occurring in southern Europe. In addition, a few of adventives species are found in Hawaii and South America.
