Diagnosis. Head ( Fig. 17A) dark brown, except pale around the eyespots. SI seta simple; premandible simple; antenna ( Fig. 17B) 5-segmented, with large LO, AR 2.0; mandible ( Fig. 17C) with 3 inner teeth, inner margin with two long setae-like spines; mentum ( Fig. 17D) with bifid median tooth and 5 lateral teeth, basolaterally with angulate shoulders; VM plates narrow with straight outside margin, connected basally to dark circular sclerite; seta submenti posteriad of plates; abdomen with short body setae, 0.4–0.5x the length of subtending segments.
Notes. This larva is similar to the one described and figured in Bode (1983: 21) for E. brehmi group, although the antennal ratios are somewhat lower (1.2–1.5).
Ecology and habitat. Species in this group have a temperature preference of 11.2–12.4°C ( Rossaro 1991). Larvae prefer middle mountain brook habitats with flow rates of up to 0.9 m /s and prefers gravel and stony substrates ( Thienemann 1954).
Sampling sites. Mississagi, Massasauga, Arrowhead and Algonquin Provincial Parks.
Nearctic distribution. Canada: Ontario.
