Diagnosis. Head ( Fig. 16A) pale brown; SI seta bifid; pecten epipharyngis consisting of 3 equal sized scales; premandible simple with brush; antenna ( Fig. 16B) AR 1.5; mandible ( Fig. 16C) brownish with crenulate outer margin; mentum ( Fig. 16D) with median tooth 2x the width of 1 st lateral; 2 nd lateral smaller and pressed against 1 st; abdomen with long setal tufts ( Fig. 16E); anal tubules cylindrical about as long as posterior parapods.
Notes. The base of mandible is not quite as dark as shown in Epler (2001).
Ecology and habitat. Larvae prefer temperatures near 18 °C but will tolerate from 14– 21 °C ( Rossaro 1991). This is a lotic species feeding on plant debris, detritus and diatoms ( McSchaffrey & Olive 1985). This species occurred in all habitats in the study streams (i.e. pools, riffles and moss).
Sampling sites. Arrowhead Provincial Park and Muskoka District.
Nearctic distribution. Canada: Alberta, Nova Scotia, Québec, Saskatchewan, first Ontario record USA: Georgia, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon .
