Diagnosis. Libythea geoffroyi howarthi is most similar to L. g. pulchra based on the shape of the forewing. However, the male of L. g. howarthi lacks the orange coloration of the hindwing, and has faint white marks in cells Rs 4, M 1 and M 2.

Distribution. Papua New Guinea: Bougainville. Solomon Islands.

Remarks. This subspecies is known only from the two type specimens designated by Petersen (1968). Petersen incorrectly spelled the specific epithet, and it is here corrected. The paratype at the BMNH was examined. The holotype of this species is presumed to be stored at the BMNH, but it could not be located during the author’s visit to that museum.
