Two small specimens ( Fig. 8-9 View FIGURE 8 View FIGURE 9 ) described by Richards et al. (2000) could not be identified either. These specimens that were collected in a mid-water trawl off the Australian NW Shelf and in a plankton net in the Timor Sea, respectively, also had nasal and nuchal spines typical of the subgenus, plus the Timor Sea specimen had very long AIO spines. The prominent pigment pattern of the Timor Sea specimen may even indicate that it is the young of P. macrorhynchus . The Australian NW Shelf specimen that lacks AIO spines may not even belong to Pterygotrigla , but information is very limited on young stages for the entire family. However, until transitional development stages are found, it is premature to assign these to a taxon or accurately clarify their identities.
