Geographic distribution. Unevenly distributed in the Palaearctic region . In Europe, this species is common in countries with temperate climates. Rarely found in North Africa. It has a nonuniform distribution in the Caucasus, in Central Asia , Western and Eastern Siberia, the Far East, China and Japan.

Ecology. This species is found in differing types of running and stagnant waters. Most cases it has been found on various solid substrates, floating on the water surface. This leech feeds on the blood of different fish and amphibians.
