Genus Tana Reed

Tana Reed, 1888: 284 . Type species: Lagarus paulseni Philippi, 1865 , automatic. Tana Reed, 1888 new name for Lagarus Philippi, 1865 (see James, 1973a: 26.3).

= Lagarus Philippi, 1865: 728 . Type species: Lagarus paulseni Philippi, 1865 , by monotypy. Preoccupied by Chaudoir, 1838.

= Lagarinus Enderlein, 1913a: 251 . Type species: Lagarinus paradoxus Enderlein, 1913a , by original designation.

Comments. It is interesting to note that Hardy (1920: 537) synonymized both Lagarus Philippi, 1865 and Lagarinus Enderlein, 1913a , as well as Nonacris with Chiromyza . This was followed by Bezzi (1922: 119). However, Curran (1936) considered Lagarus a separate genus, differing from Chiromyza by a broad and prominent face with long hairs, a deeply sulcate prosternum, and a discal cell not completely closed (see Osten Sacken, 1882: 366, 368). He also mentioned that males of Lagarus (= Tana ) have the posterior tarsomeres swollen and shorter than seen in Chiromyza .
