Age estimation
Otolith extraction was performed through gill opening. It consisted in cutting the gill isthmus and in bending the head back away from the rest of the body; the prootic bulla were then carefully cracked and otoliths were extracted ( Secor et al., 1992). Otolith sagittae were mounted with drop of glue in glass slides, ground along the longitudinal plane using increasing granularity sandpaper (400 and 1200 grain). The exposed surface was then polished and smoothed using successively alumina paste and felt polishing. Finally, the glass slides were observed in a binocular microscope for otolith reading ( Waldron and Kerstan, 2001).
