Entomobrya egleri Arlé & Guimarães, 1978: 12 View in CoL , figs 24–30, Brazil, Pará state, Santo Antônio de Tauá municipality [currently “Santo Antônio do Tauá”] (original description).

Typological note. The type material of E. egleri View in CoL deposited at MNRJ was destroyed in the fire of September 2018, while the paratypes deposited at MPEG were lost (Orlando T. Silveira, personal communication). The neotype is herein designated from specimens collected near to the type locality ( Fig. 20 View FIGURE 20 ), according to ICZN (2000) (see chapter 16, article 75.3.4, 75.3.6, and article 76). The specimens fit all morphological characteristics presented in the original description ( Arlé & Guimarães 1978).

Examined type material. Neotype male designed on slide ( INPA-CLL 0000273 ): Brazil, Pará state, Ananindeua municipality, “Águas Lindas” neighborhood, forest of “Jerusalém” street, 01°23’58”S, 48°22’35”W ( Fig. 20 View FIGURE 20 ), 25 m, 13–15.viii.2021, pitfall-trap, SS Viana coll. GoogleMaps

Variations. Entomobrya egleri specimens from different localities mostly show similar variations, especially on the body color pattern ( Figs 12–14 View FIGURE 12 View FIGURE 13 View FIGURE 14 ) and polymorphisms (mac or mes, mac present or absent) in the dorsal chaetotaxy of the head and Th II – Abd IV ( Figs 15D View FIGURE 15 , 17 View FIGURE 17 ). However, some atypical variations were found in some populations, as head A3 mac present only in a specimen from Belterra and another from Melgaço municipality (Pará state) ( Fig. 15D View FIGURE 15 ). In four specimens from Roraima state (Amajari and Caracaraí municipality) on one side of Th II there are p4, m4ip, m5 and m5a mac ( Fig. 17A View FIGURE 17 ), although these last three mac are only present in two specimens. Other atypical variations are in a specimen from Rurópolis and another from Belterra municipality (Pará state), with Th III p1ip and p2e mac present on both sides (absent in specimens from other localities), although this Belterra specimen also has m1 mac present on both sides ( Fig. 17A View FIGURE 17 ), besides 1 extra mac on one side of the colophore anteriorly ( Fig. 19A View FIGURE 19 ). These atypical and isolated variations among the populations may be evidence of potential speciation, but a study based on molecular data is necessary to determine if they represent a cryptic species complex .

Distribution. In the original description, E. egleri was registered in three states (Pará, Amapá and Tocantins), and later in Amazonas state as well ( Arlé & Guimarães 1978; Oliveira & Deharveng 1995). Here, the distribution of the species is expanded to another three states (Acre, Rondônia and Roraima) from the Brazilian Amazon ( Fig. 20 View FIGURE 20 ).

Remarks. Entomobrya egleri closely resembles E. uambae Arlé, 1959 from Mato Grosso state, by the presence of a transverse band of dark pigment on Th II–Abd III, Ant IV apical bulb absent, prelabral chaetae pl1–2 smooth, papilla E I.p. conical-shaped, and overall dorsal macrochaetotaxy pattern ( Figs 12–14 View FIGURE 12 View FIGURE 13 View FIGURE 14 , 15C View FIGURE 15 , 16B View FIGURE 16 ). However, E. egleri differs from this species by Ant I with 4 elongated sens (absent in E. uambae ), Ant II with 8 elongated dorsal sens and 4 ventral mac (5 dorsal sens and no ventral mac in E. uambae ) ( Figs 15B View FIGURE 15 , 30C View FIGURE 30 ), labral outer papillae with 3 projections (2 in E. uambae ) ( Figs 16A View FIGURE 16 , 31A View FIGURE 31 ), Abd IV with 19 posterior mes (16 in E. uambae ) ( Figs 17C View FIGURE 17 , 32C View FIGURE 32 ), unguiculus III ai lamella acuminate (slightly truncate in E. uambae ) ( Figs 18E View FIGURE 18 , 33G View FIGURE 33 ), collophore with 3 distal mac (6 in E. uambae ) ( Figs 19A View FIGURE 19 , 34A View FIGURE 34 ), and distal dens with two rows (inner and outer) of modified mac (only 1 inner in E. uambae ) ( Figs 19D View FIGURE 19 , 34D View FIGURE 34 ). Other differences between these species are summarized in Table 2.
