Identification. Body elongated. Body scales small (10–

12 dorsal scales) with smooth posterior edge. Mouth with a medial tooth patch on vomer; three rows of teeth in the oral jaws, the teeth of outer rows larger and more robust. Posterodorsal edge of the opercular bone straight. Thirty to 40 gill rakers on the lower branch of the first branchial arch. First dorsal fin origin coincident or slightly ante- rior to the vertical that passes through the anus; five or less interdorsals; last ray of the anal fin anterior to verti- cal passing through the last ray of the second dorsal fin. Three rows of subocular scales; scales present between the anterior rays of the anal and second dorsal fins.
