Microsciurus santanderensis was once considered a subspecies of Sciurus pucheranii. Monotypic.
Distribution. NC Colombia, in Santander Department, between the Magdalena River and the E Andes Range, and W toward the upper portion of the W Andes Range; possibly also in surrounding departments. View Figure
Descriptive notes. Head-body 133-160 mm, tail 136-152 mm. No specific data are available for body weight. Santander Dwarf Squirrels have dark brownish dorsum, with black mid-dorsal stripe and grayish venter. Postauricular patches are pale and ocherous. Tail is grizzled black brown, with slight gray frosting.
Habitat. Marshlands and montane forests, known from elevations of 100-1000 m and 2700-3800 m.
