Type Locality: Cape of Good Hope to the Philippines.

Vernacular Names: Dugong.

Synonyms: Dugong australis (Retzius 1794) ; Dugong dugung ( Erxleben 1777) ; Dugong hemprichii (Ehrenberg 1832) ; Dugong indicus ( Boddaert 1785) ; Dugong lottum (Ehrenberg 1832) ; Dugong malayana (Owen 1875) ; Dugong syren (Brookes 1828) ; Dugong tabernaculi (Rüppell 1834) .

Distribution: Tropical coastal waters of Indian and W Pacific Oceans.

Conservation: CITES – Appendix I; U.S. ESA – Endangered except in Palau, where it is Proposed Endangered; IUCN – Vulnerable.
