Ecnomina scutica sp. nov.

Diagnosis. Ecnomina scutica can be separated from all other species in the genus by the distinctive long whiplike structure distally on segment IX.

Description. Head, body and wings dark brown; wings partly drawn ( Fig. 5 ), similar to E. legula ( Fig. 3 ). Forewing length about 3 times width: male 5.0– 5.8 mm, female 5.6–6.7 mm. Forewing fork 2 relatively long, sessile or with short footstalk, footstalk length up to 0.4 times length cross-vein m, nygma present, length fork 2 about 1.2–1.3 times length of fork 3; fork 3 relatively long, sessile or with short footstalk, length fork 3 at least ten times length footstalk, footstalk length 0–0.3 times length cross-vein m; r-m and m not contiguous at fork 3 by about 1.7 times length cross-vein m; fork 4 slightly shorter than fork 3; fork 5 long, length about 1.8 times length of fork 4. Hindwing length about 2.7 times width, fork 2 sessile or with short footstalk, length footstalk up to 0.7 times length cross-vein m, fork 2 about 1.2–1.3 times length of fork 3.

Male. Segment IX with robust lateral extension with very long and slender whip-like process dorso-distally. Tergum X membranous, with two relatively long and slender diverging processes ( Figs 63, 65 ). Superior appendages reduced, slightly dorso-ventrally compressed; in lateral view, slender, length about 6 times width ( Fig. 63 ); in dorsal view, length about 3.5 times width, bifid distally ( Fig. 65 ). Phallus generally tube-like, slightly compressed distally; with a single, robust, strongly down curved or hooked process (phallic guide) arising from near the base of the inferior appendages ( Fig. 63 ). Inferior appendages in ventral view, fused basally, with wing-like extensions disto-laterally ( Fig. 64 ); in lateral view, ovoid, dilated distally ( Fig. 63 ).

Female. Genitalia with a single elongate and relatively slender mesal process on sternite VIII; segment IX relatively long, tapered slightly distally; segment X relatively short and segments IX and X relatively slender, with a few pairs of hairs on segment X ( Fig. 173 ).

Holotype male: Victoria, Bells Clearing , 6 km S of Aberfeldy (about 37°44'S, 146°22'E), 9 Feb 1977, A.A. Calder ( NMV, T-19648).

Paratypes: Victoria. 2 males (specimen PT-1082 figured), collected with holotype ; 15 females (specimen PT-1081 figured), same loc. and collector, 8 Feb 1977; 2 males, Latrobe R. at Willow Grove, 24 Jan 1979, LTCS ; 1 male, Thomson R., Knappings Clearing, 11 Feb 1980, Wells and McNamara .

Etymology. Scutica - Latin word for whip (very long and slender whip-like processes on segment IX).

Remarks. Ecnomina scutica is a very distinctive species which has been collected widely through central and eastern Victoria (latitudinal range 36°26'- 38°8.8'S).
