Diagnosis. Tephritis kovalevi kovalevi is similar to T. k. kumana in the wing pattern and having reddish yellow oviscape as long as 3 posteriormost tergites and aculeus 5 × as long as wide, differing from it by the mainly orangeyellow cuticle of thorax and abdomen (at most with brown vittae or spots) (predominantly dark brown to black in T. k. kumana, at most with reddish yellow postpronotal lobe, notopleuron, sides of scutellum, and narrow lateral and posterior margins of abdominal tergites 1–4).

Description: Head: as described for species. Thorax: Ground colour yellow to brownish red, yellow microtrichose and white setulose. Scutum with 5 poorly expressed pale brownish red vittae. Scutellum anteromedially usually dark brown ( Fig. 2 2b View FIGURES 2 ), in 15% of specimens entirely reddish or brownish yellow. Mediotergite reddish yellow to black in ground colour, uniformly microtrichose.

Terminalia: Female. Oviscape as long as 3 posteriormost abdominal tergites, orange-yellow, rarely brownish yellow. Eversible membrane, aculeus and spermathecae ( Figs 23 View FIGURES 23 a–c) as described for species.

Measurements: Female. BL=4.0– 4.3 mm (n=10); WL= 3.8–4.4 mm, C2= 0.8–1 mm; AL= 0.77–0.9 mm; AL/ C2=0.83–1.0 (n=10). Male. 4.2–4.5 mm (n=10); WL=4.0– 4.7 mm (n=10).

Host plants. Sonchus palustris L. ( Korneyev & Kameneva 1990; this paper) ( Figs 23e, g View FIGURES 23 ).

Distribution. Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan; exact origin of the specimen from “Kaukasus” (MNKB) belonging here is unknown. Tephritis kovalevi kovalevi occurs in the lower or middle belt of mountains (1400–1500 m a. s. l) along rivers infesting flower heads of Sonchus palustris .
