Type Locality: Perú, Puno Dept., Osila (= Asillo), 17 mi (27 km) ENE Ayaviri, 13,000 ft (3962 m) (as interpreted by Pearson, 1958:426).
Vernacular Names: Bunchgrass Pericote.
Synonyms: Phyllotis lutescens Thomas 1902 ; Phyllotis nogalaris Thomas 1921 ; Phyllotis phaeus Osgood 1944 ; Phyllotis tucumanus Thomas 1912 .
Distribution: Upper Andean slopes on Atlantic drainage, from SC Perú (Cuzco), through W Bolivia (1700-4900 m), to N Argentina (Catamarca).
Conservation: IUCN – Lower Risk (lc).
Discussion: All-acrocentric karyotype (2n = 68) interpreted as ancestral state of the genus ( Pearson and Patton, 1976). In Bolivia, Anderson (1997) recognized osilae (lutescens as a full synonym) and phaeus as subspecies.
