TYPE LOCALITY: U.S.A., Pennsylvania, Philadelphia .
DISTRIBUTION: Colombia and Venezuela to C. Chile, Uruguay, and C. Argentina; Hawaii; N. and C. Mexico throughout the United States to S. British Columbia, S.E. Mackensie, Hudson Bay and S. Quebec ( Canada); Galapagos; Bermuda; accidental on Cuba, Hispaniola, Iceland, and the Orkney Isis., Guatemala and S. Mexico (BVR, KFK).
COMMENT: Includes semotus; see Sanborn and Crespo, 1957, Bol. Mus. Argentine Cienc. Nat. Bernardino Rivadavia, 4: 12.
PROTECTED STATUS: U.S. ESA - Endangered as L. c. semotus subspecies only.
