Material examined. Table 2; Figure 2. Medium-sized opossum, smaller than Didelphis spp. ,
slightly woolly and with dense fur. It has a blackish head with contrasting cream-colored spots above the eyes and cheeks. Philander opossum is often mistaken with Chironectes minimus (Zimmermann, 1780) , but the distinctive 4 broad black bands on the dorsum are absent in P. opossum .
