Type Locality: West Indes, Lesser Antilles, Martinique.
Vernacular Names: Desmarest's Pilorie.
Synonyms: Megalomys pilorides (Desmarest 1826) ; Megalomys piloris ( Major 1901) .
Distribution: Known only from Martinique.
Conservation: IUCN – Extinct.
Discussion: As compared with M. luciae ( BMNH 53.12.16.2, the holotype), the cranium of M. desmarestii ( BMNH 50.11.30.6, 55.12.24.201) is generally larger in all dimensions, its m3 larger relative to m2, and the upper incisors yellowish-orange instead of plain orange.
