Genus Palaeomedeterus Meunier, 1895 View in CoL

Type species. Tipula culiciforme Meunier, 1899 , by subsequent monotypy in Meunier (1899: 174) [= Palaeomedeterus meunieri Meuffels & Grootaert, 1999 View in CoL ].

Diagnosis. Male: face and clypeus only slightly narrowed beneath antenna; scape dorsally bare; postpedicel rounded subrectangular, with dorsoapical arista; ac setae biseriate; 6 dc setae, decreasing in size anteriorly; median scutellar seta strong, lateral scutellar seta reduced to fine hair or absent; long propleural seta present ventrad of anterior spiracle; TI mostly bare, but with distinct ventral apical seta; TII with ad-pd setal pairs and very strong anterior seta near 1/3; FII and FIII with distinct anterior preapical setae; M 1 beyond dmm crossvein becoming subparallel with R 4+5, with M 1 ending behind wing apex; sternite 4 slightly enlarged ventrally to form hood for hypopygium, and with row of closely spaced setae along posterior margin; segment 7 as short peduncle; hypopygium subrectangular; surstylus subrectangular; cercus short tapering subtriangular, with long apical setae.

Remarks. The genus Palaeomedeterus includes some eight nominal species from Baltic amber ( Evenhuis, 2014) and the new Camber amber species described below.
