Habitat preference: According to Červená et al. (2021b), Chernes hahnii is strictly associated with tree microhabitats. It prefers open areas, where it can be found under tree bark, but sometimes in forests ( Beier 1963a). In Slovakia it was found in bird nest ( Christophoryová et al. 2011d; Christophoryová et al. 2017b) and in heaps of decomposing material ( Kaňuchová et al. 2015), from compost heaps ( Christophoryová et al. 2017a), from ant nests ( Christophoryová et al. 2017b), in dead wood and in tree hollow, and under tree bark ( Christophoryová et al. 2017c), and it was also collected by sifting of organic material, and sifting of rotten hay garden waste and compost ( Krajčovičová et al. 2012). In Hungary, it has been reported from the debris of a horse stable (Novák 2018). During the present study it was found in the following habitats: softwood groves, willow swamps, plant debris from a garden, from plane trees, under poplar wood, willow-poplar groves, under bark of plane trees and oak trees, oak forests on loess, and from barns.
Remarks: Chernes hahnii was first reported from Hungary by Mahnert (1983). Since then, it has been found in numerous new localities.
