Occurrence: Austria, Czech Republic, Georgia, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Slovakia, Turkey (WPC 2023).

Known localities in Hungary: Tahitótfalu: Ábrahám-bükk (Novák 2018).

New data: Makád: Dunavár, 07.04.1990, leg. OM (HNHM Pseud-1535: 1♂, 4♀); Pilisszántó: MTA experimental forest area, beech forest, sifted from elaf litter, 02.06.2015, leg. JN (HNHM pseud-1852: 1♂) .

Habitat preference: Beier (1963a) mentioned this species from the lef litter of humid shrubs and forests. In Slovakia, Christophoryová (2013) found the species in oak-hornbeam forests, and Kaňuchová et al. (2015) reported it from heaps with decomposing material. Jászayová & Jászay (2022) reported it from fir forest, and Christophoryová et al. (2017c) from dead wood and tree hollows. In Hungary it has been found in leaf litter of beech forests (Novák 2018).

Remarks: the species was described as a subspecies, Chthonius tetrachelatus fuscimanus by Simon (1900), and elevated to species level ( Harvey 1991) and regarded as a senior synonym of Chthonius (Ephippiochcthonius) austriacus Beier by Gardini (1980). It is known from the neighbouring Austria and Slovakia, and it was recently found in Hungary (Novák 2018).
