Known localities in Hungary: Újszentmargita ( Mahnert 1980, 1983). Bükkszentkereszt: Hollóstető, Nagy-dél; Cserépváralja: Karud Hillside; Miskolc: Jávorkút, Lillafüred, Savós Valley, Sebes; Parasznya: Dolka Ridge, mouth of Csókás Spring Cave; Varbó: Örvény-kő ( Novák 2012). Budapest: Hármashatár Hill ( Novák 2016).

Habitat preference: Christophoryová et al. (2011c) reported Chthonius hungaricus from the leaf litter of deciduous forests, and from fallen wood in oak forest. From Hungary it was reported from the leaf litter of oak and beech forests and from decaying wood ( Novák 2012, 2016), from beech-hornbeam and alder forests (Novák 2018). During the present study it was found in loess oak forest.

Remarks: Chthonius hungaricus was described by Mahnert (1980) from the Hortobágy National Park of the Great Hungarian Plain, and later reported from neighbouring Slovakia ( Christophoryová et al. 2011c). During the study of abundant Chthonius material from Transylvania, Romania, Gardini (2014) attributed to C. hungaricus a large number of specimens which had been previously reported as C. diophthalmus Daday, 1889 ( Beier 1939a). In Hungary this species also has been reported from the Bükk Mts ( Novák 2012), the Buda Mts ( Novák 2016), and the Zemplén Mts (Novák 2018).

Occurrence: Austria, Hungary, Slovenia (WPC 2023).

Known localities in Hungary: Szakonyfalu (Novák 2018).

Habitat preference: This species has been reported mostly from leaf litter ( Beier 1963a).

Remarks: Chthonius pusillus was previously known only from Austria and Slovenia, and was redescribed by Gardini (2014). It was recently found within Hungary in the Őrség National Park, which is near the western border of the country, and close to its Austrian and Slovenian locations ( Beier 1947; Gardini 2014; Novák 2018).

Occurrence: Austria ( Beier 1956), Czech Republic ( Šťáhlavský 2006), France ( Judson 1990), Hungary ( Novák & Kutasi 2014), Italy ( Judson 1990), Slovakia ( Mock et al., 2004), Switzerland ( Červená et al. 2020a).

Known localities in Hungary: Balatonfüred: Lóczy Cave ( Novák & Kutasi 2014) ; Budapest: Julianna-major ( Novák 2016).

New data: nil.

Habitat preference: Chthonius ressli has been found under stones ( Beier 1963a; Judson 1990), and collected from heaps with decomposing plant material ( Kaňuchová et al. 2015; Christophoryová et al. 2017a), and from tree hollows ( Christophoryová et al. 2017c). In Hungary it was found in a cave ( Novák & Kutasi 2014) and in grass next to a greenhouse ( Novák 2016).

Remarks: this species was reported from neighbouring Slovakia ( Mock et al., 2004), and was more recently found in Hungary ( Novák & Kutasi 2014; Novák 2016).
