Type locality.

Yellowstone River (150 miles above its mouth), near Glendive, Montana, USA; stratum: Pierre Shale; age: Late Cretaceous.

Type material.

Syntypes, ANSP IP17139, 2 shells.

Current taxonomic status.

Ellipsoscapha occidentalis (Meek & Hayden, 1856) ( Sohl 1967). Substitution of the junior primary homonym is not mandatory if the conditions of Article 23.9.5 ICZN (1999) are met, but a request for a ruling of the Commission under its plenary powers to validate the junior homonymous name would be necessary.
