Type Locality: Tanzania, mainland opposite Zanzibar.
Vernacular Names: Black and Rufous Elephant Shrew.

Subspecies Rhynchocyon petersi subsp. adersi Dollman 1912
Distribution: E Tanzania (including Mafia and Zanzibar); SE Kenya.
Conservation: IUCN – Endangered.
Discussion: Two subspecies are listed by Corbet and Hanks (1968:64) and Corbet (1974:2). Kingdon (1974 a:41) considered petersi a subspecies of cirnei .
