Type Locality: Australia, New South Wales, Blue Mtns.
Vernacular Names: Red Kangaroo.
Synonyms: Macropus (Osphranter) dissimulatus W. Rothschild 1905 ; Macropus (Osphranter) griseolanosus (Quoy and Gaimard 1825) ; Macropus (Osphranter) laniger (Gaimard 1823) ; Macropus (Osphranter) lanigerus Gray 1825 ; Macropus (Osphranter) lanosus ( Gray 1827) ; Macropus (Osphranter) occidentalis Cahn 1906 ; Macropus (Osphranter) pallidus Schwarz 1910 ; Macropus (Osphranter) pictus Gould 1861 ; Macropus (Osphranter) ruber Crisp 1862 .
Distribution: Mainland, mid-latitude Australia.
Conservation: U.S. ESA – Delisted Taxa (recovered); IUCN – Lower Risk (lc). Very abundant.
Discussion: Maintained in a monotypic genus Megaleia by McKenna and Bell (1997), but Dawson and Flannery (1985) showed that it belongs in genus Macropus , subgenus Osphranter .
