Encyclia cordigera (Kunth) Dressler (1964: 247) View in CoL . Basionym: Cymbidium cordigerum Kunth (1815: 341) View in CoL .
Type:— VENEZUELA. Porto Cabello: Vales de Aragua, no date, Bonpland & Humboldt s.n. (holotype: P 407427 ,
photograph!).
Homotypic synonym:
Epidendrum cordigerum (Kunth) Foldats (1969: 234) View in CoL .
Heterotypic synonym:
Encyclia atropurpurea var. rhodoglossa Schlechter (1922: 45) View in CoL . Type :— PANAMA. Balboa : Canal Zone, 1915, Powell 80 (isotype, AMES, photograph!).
Encyclia doeringii Hoehne (1946: 24) View in CoL . Basionym: Epidendrum doeringii (Hoehne) Hawkes (1956: 170) View in CoL . Type:— BRAZIL. São Paulo: no locality, 28 October 1942, Doering s.n. (holotype: SP 52150 !).
Encyclia cordigera View in CoL occurs from Central America to northern South America. Its occurrence in Brazil was indicated as likely for the area west of the Amazon ( Withner 2000). However, there are no records to back up this supposition. The type for the synonym E. doeringii View in CoL was cited for western São Paulo State, but it was obtained from cultivated material. We consider that it is again a confusion because this is unlikely based on geographical considerations. A second record of E. cordigera View in CoL for Brazil exists at K, but certainly it is a specimen with incorrect collection data (Weis s.n., K 878404). It was apparently collected in Rio de Janeiro, an unlikely situation based on striking differences in climate, vegetation and the known range of E. cordigera View in CoL , with no records in the intermediate areas.
Encyclia ivonae Carnevali & Romero (1994: 65) . Type:— VENEZUELA. Bolívar: Carrao Tepui , 1675-1980 m, 5-6 December 1944, Steyermark 60870 (holotype: AMES, photograph!; isotype: VEN).
The type locality of E. ivonae in Venezuela lies near the border with Brazil, and therefore its occurrence in the Brazil is possible. Despite this, its occurrence has not thus far been confirmed by any records in the herbaria studied. Nevertheless, the protologue cited a paratype (Carnevali 3325 at VEN) collected in Serra Parima, in the western limits of Roraima, exactly on the Brazilian-Venezuelan border, a locality to which we had no access. Encyclia ivonae is similar to E. diurna ( Jacquin 1790: 107) Schltr. (1919: 1219) View in CoL , but differs in the size of the plant (smaller for E. ivonae ) and an elliptic lip midlobe in E. ivonae that is round in E. diurna View in CoL .
