27. Podocystis spathulata (Shadbolt) Van Heurck ( Figs 30, 31 View FIGURES 29–38 )

Basionym: Euphyllodium spathulatum Shadbolt.

Synonym: Podocystis spathulata (Shadbolt) Frenguelli.

Type locality: Geo. Busk, Port Natal (now Durbon, South Africa)

Reference: Hustedt 1931 –1959, p. 133, fig. 653.

Morphometrics: Valves 41–46 (37–100) μm long, 37–41 (25–53) μm wide, transapical striae 4–5 (5–7) in 10 μm, and 5 in 10 μm towards the ends.

Remarks: Podocystis spathulata is predominant on the coastal areas of the Pacific Ocean and especially common in the Australian Islands ( Hustedt 1927 – 1931), occurring in Madagascar ( Sournia 1968), in Tanzania ( Foged 1975), in Tahiti ( Ricard 1977), in Puerto Rico ( Navarro 1981), in Fujian coast of China ( Jin et al. 1985), in Palawan of Philippines ( Podzorski & Håkansson 1987), in Ishigaki Island of Okinawa, Japan ( Negoro & Yoshida 1990), in Guam, Society Islands and Mahé ( Lobban et al. 2012), in northeastern Brazil ( Costa et al. 2009), in Chuuk Lagoon of Micronesia ( Park et al. 2018). It is a typical tropical taxon growing in warmer oceans. In South Korea, it was reported previously as plankton in the southern sea ( Shim 1994), and very rare as benthic along the Seogwipo coast in Jeju Island.
