status

20. Leudugeria janischii (Grunow) Tempère ( Figs 26–28 View FIGURES 22–28 , 185, 186 View FIGURES 185–192 )

Basionym: Euodia janischii Grunow in Van Heurck.

Synonym: Eunotiopsis janischii Grunow in Cleve & M̂ller.

Type locality: not given.

Reference: Van Heurck 1896, p. 539, fig. 287.

Morphometrics: Valves 56–266 μm long, 29–33 μm wide, transapical striae on valves, 1.4–2.6 in 10 μm, areolae on a stria, large and 1.3–1.7 in 10 μm, and striae and areolae on mantle, 6.4 and 7.8 in 10 μm, respectively.

Remarks: It was reported that this taxon is distributed in Japan, China, Ceylon ( Sri Lanka), Australia, the Seychelles, the Galapagos Island, and as fossil diatoms in Sta. Monica in California ( Van Heurck 1896, Leuduger-Fortmorel 1898), but has not been discovered since then. However, there are a report that it occurred in Saba Island of Netherlands Antilles in the Caribbean Sea ( Stancheva & Deheyn 2010). Only one species in the genus, but recently a new species, Leudugeria thermalis Stancheva & Deheyn which is a closely similar to L. janischii , was erected ( Stancheva & Deheyn 2010). This taxon is rare as an epiphyte on rock pools along the Seogwipo coast in Jeju Island, and representing a new record for South Kora.
