Genus Eucibdelus Kraatz, 1859

Eucibdelus Kraatz 1859: 70 . Type species: Eucibdelus gracilis Kraatz , fixed by monotypy.

Nudeucibdelus Hayashi, 1997. Type species: Eucibdelus (Nudeucibdelus) ishigakiensis Hayashi, 1997 , fixed by original designation and monotypy. Synonymized by Hayashi, 1998: 104.

Pareucibdelus Hayashi, 1997 . Type species: Eucibdelus japonicus Sharp, 1874 , fixed by original designation.

Neocibdelus Hayashi, 1998. Type species: Eucibdelus (Neocibdelus) orientalis Hayashi, 1998 , fixed by original designation and monotypy. Proposed for misidentification of Eucibdelus Kraatz by Hayashi, 1997.

Diagnosis. Members of the genus Eucibdelus can be distinguished from other members of the Eucibdelus lineage by the following characteristics: medial margins of mandibles asymmetrical, mola of the left mandible larger than that of the right mandible, slightly bicuspid or truncate, with the medial margin of the mola straight and long ( Schillhammer, 2001); third segment of labial palpus glabrous to sparsely pubescent; meso- and metatibiae without any spines except terminal ones, but at most with some spinous long setae underneath and/or laterally ( Hayashi, 1997).

In 1997 and 1998, Hayashi published a series of papers on the genus Eucibdelus , and erected several subgenera for it. However, the definition of these subgenera was based on very limited material and thus on characters only partly useful for a subgeneric classification, rendering the unassigned remainder of the species as members of Eucibdelus s.str., which they most likely are not. Therefore, the subgenera are ignored as long as no serious phylogenetic study, preferably based on molecular data, has been carried out.
