Parus obtectus Cabanis

Parus (Poecila) obtectus Cabanis, 1871b: 237 .

Now: Parus cinctus cinctus Boddaert, 1783 View in CoL . See Hartert (1905: 366).

Type series: Cabanis (1871b: 237–238) did not specify how many specimens of this tit he examined, but exhibited “einige ... Bälge” (“several ... skins”) when he presented the description of this species at the 34th Monthly Meeting of the German Ornithological Society held on 1 May 1871. The two specimens listed below qualify as syntypes of P. obtectus , while other ZMB specimens were received too late to be types of the species. Unfortunately, both syntypes of Parus obtectus (see below) and most of the other specimens from the Dybowski series ( ZMB 23011, ZMB 23147, and ZMB 23148) have been lost. The only surviving specimen, an unsexed mount (B.8533, ZMB 23010), was collected by Dybowski on 13 October 1870 NS at "Baikalsee", i.e. at Kultuk (see below). It has thus been collected at the same time and at the same place as both syntypes, but was received at the ZMB in September 1871 (according to the Accession Catalogue of the ZMB), i.e. after the species was described by Cabanis (1871b).

Taczanowski (1889: 12) listed another three specimens deposited in the MIZ as types of this species, two of which (MIZ 7991, MIZ 8018) are still there ( Mlíkovský 2007a: 62). There is, however, no proof that Cabanis examined them, and their syntypical status is thus doubtful.

Syntype (lost): ZMB 20047 (B.7939), mounted, ♂, collected by B. Dybowski in October 1870 at Kultuk. Received at the ZMB in January 1871 according to the Accession Catalogue of the ZMB, where the specimen was marked as “Ex. orig.”.

Syntype (lost): ZMB 20048 (B.7939), mounted, ♀, collected by B. Dybowski in October 1870 at Kultuk. Received at the ZMB in January 1871 according to the Accession Catalogue of the ZMB, where the specimen was marked as “Ex. orig.”.

Type locality: Cabanis (1871b: 237) stated that Dybowski collected type specimens “in Sibirien südlich vom Baikalsee”, i.e. “in Siberia south of Lake Baikal” (see also Hartert 1905: 366). Voinstvenskij (1954: 767) inaccurately listed “ûžn. Zabajkal’e”, i.e. “southern Transbaikalia” as the type locality of P. obtectus . Entries in the Accession Catalogue of the ZMB indicate that all specimens received from Taczanowski in January 1871 originated from Kultuk, where Dybowski resided from January 1869 ( Mlíkovský 2007a). We thus restrict here the type locality of P. o b t e c t u s to Kultuk, Irkutskaâ Province, Russia [51.72˚N, 103.68˚E].
