status

subsp. nov.

Aethes kindermanniana macedonica Richter & Budashkin , ssp. nov.

( Figs. 20, 21 View FIGURES 18–21 )

Type material. Holotype ♂, North Macedonia, Galičica Nacional park, Asan Gjura , 30.vii.2019 (I. R.). GP 30461 IgR . Paratypes 2♂, same data as for the holotype (I. R). DNA Barcode TMLF Lep 28719 .

Diagnosis. The new subspecies is close to Aethes kindermanniana kindermanniana ( Treitschke, 1830) ( Treitschke 1830) ( Figs 18, 19 View FIGURES 18–21 ) by habitus and the structure of male genitalia, but differs by larger size, more diffuse and lighter pattern of the forewing. Additionally, hindwing is lighter and thinner, socii are less prickly, the acantae on the apex of the median process of transtilla are larger, and the medioventral process of the aedeagus more slender. Although the new subspecies is insufficiently supported by molecular data (0.31% distance from the nominate subspecies), the morphological differences suggest the existence of a separate subspecies from North Macedonia.

Description. Adult ( Fig. 20 View FIGURES 18–21 ). Sexual dimorphism unknown. Wingspan 13 mm. The basic colour of head, tegulae and thorax white to pale yellow. Patagia, anterior part of tegulae and posterior part of thorax deep yellow. Scales on patagia and on posterior part of thorax long and erect. The labial palpi of medium length, thick. Segment 3 much shorter than segment 2. Upper side dirty white, lateral side ochreous–yellow. Segment 3 brown, white at the tip. Scapus deep yellow, antennae brown, circled dirty yellow, densely covered with small hairs in males. Forewing medium wide, triangular, with a relatively well pronounced tornal angle. Its main colour dirty white. Forewing pattern blurred, consists of olive and dark olive spots and bands. Median band most prominent, noticeably widening towards costa, preapical band significantly shorter, runs from tornal angle of wing almost perpendicular to its costal margin. Cilia line olive or dark olive, cilia yellowish white or dirty white. Hindwing light grey, with dirty white cilia.

Male genitalia. ( Fig. 21 View FIGURES 18–21 ). Tegumen wide and short. Socii thin, with few spines on underside of their proximal parts. The median process of transtilla wide and short, rounded trapezoidal, with two large spines at apex. Valva rather narrow, noticeably narrowed towards apex. Aedeagus wide and short, with 3 spiny lobes on underside of its tube and on lateral sides, with a long and rather thin median process directed caudad. Cornuti absent.

Molecular data. BIN BOLD: BOLD AAF5176 (n=2). The differences from barcoded specimens from Bulgaria, Germany, Finland and Norway is 0.31% p-distance.

Bionomy. Bionomy and early stages are unknown. Habitat ( Fig.9 View FIGURES 1–9 ).

Distribution. Known from North Macedonia only.

Etymology. The name of this new subspecies is topotypical—given following the name of the country North Macedonia, where it was discovered.
