Status at New Ireland. First recorded from St. Mathias by Duncker & Mohr (1929: 83); reported from Kung Island, New Hanover by Munro (1958: 117). ZMH material.

Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 4.—General distribution: Red Sea, East Africa and KwaZulu-Natal ( South Africa) east to Marshall and Tuamotu islands, north to southern Japan, south to Western Australia at 33°37'S, Tasmania ( Australia), and New Caledonia, recently immigrated into eastern Mediterranean Sea through Suez Canal. Forming large schools in coastal waters near coral reefs, 0–50 m depth. Transitional water and marine.
