Status at New Ireland. First recorded from Kulineua River, New Hanover as Valamugil seheli by Munro (1958: 152); subsequently reported as Valamugil seheli from Tigak Islands, Kavieng by Wright & Richards (1985: 73). Specimens observed by Jeff Kinch during CFMDP Survey at Kavieng fish market in 2004–2005.
Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 2.—General distribution: Red Sea, East Africa, Madagascar and Mascarenes east to Hawaiian and Marquesas islands, north to southern Japan, south to Derby (Western Australia) and Norfolk Island. Found in shallow coastal waters, entering lagoons, estuaries and rivers, 0–3 m depth. Freshwater, transitional water and marine.
