Status at New Ireland. First recorded from St. Mathias by Duncker & Mohr (1929: 69), based on ZMH 11829. Specimens photographed at Lissenung Island by Dietmar Amon on 18 Apr. 2009, and at 12 m depth by Dean Tully on 15 Sept. 2012; a video of a specimen taken from Alexander Passage, off southeastern New Hanover, 5–14 m depth, at St. KR 96, in 2014 (identified by Barry C. Russell).

Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 2, 4.—General distribution: Red Sea, East and South Africa, Madagascar and Mascarenes east to Wake Atoll, northern Line Islands and Pitcairn Group, north to southern Japan, south to northern New Zealand and Kermadec Islands. Found solitary or in small groups in caves and crevices of coral and rocky reefs, 2–50 m depth. Marine.
