Status at New Ireland. First recorded from New Ireland as Naucrates indicus by Lesson (1831: 157, poissons pl. 14, fig. 2), based on MNHN A.5398 (holotype); reported as N. ductor by Munro (1958: 185).
Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 0.—General distribution: Circumglobal in tropical and temperate seas, in western Pacific Ocean north to Japan, south to Norfolk Island. Pelagic, oceanic species with a semiobligate commensal relationship with sharks, rays, larger bony fishes and turtles; juveniles usually associated with jellyfish and drifting seaweed, 0–300 m depth. Marine.
