Status at New Ireland. First recorded from Lihir Group, Namatamai District, New Ireland by Fry et al. (2006: 130).

Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 5.—General distribution: East Africa, Seychelles, Comores and Mascarenes east to Hawaiian Islands and Marquesas Islands, north to southern Japan, south to off northern Western Australia, Queensland ( Australia), New Caledonia, Lord Howe Island, and Tonga. Schooling above deep reefs or rock bottom, 70–300 m depth. Marine.
