Status at New Ireland. First recorded from Lihir Group, Namatamai District by Fry et al. (2006: 129). Specimens observed by Jeff Kinch during CFMDP Survey at Kavieng fish market in 2004–2005, and by Barry C. Russell on 14 June 2014 . Specimens photographed at Lissenung Island by Dietmar Amon on 20 June 2009 ; a video of a specimen taken off Nubilus Island , off southeastern New Hanover , at 3–32 m depth, St. KR 88, in 2014 (identified by Barry C. Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 2, 5.—General distribution: East Africa, Madagascar and Mascarenes east to Philippines, Samoa and Tonga, north to Ryukyu Islands, south to Western Australia and Lord Howe Island. Found in coral reefs including sheltered lagoons, estuaries and lower reaches of rivers and streams, 0–60 m depth. Freshwater, transitional water and marine.
