Status at New Ireland. First recorded from St. Mathias by Duncker & Mohr (1929: 72), based on ZMH 11722; a specimen photographed in Kavieng region in June 2013 during ACIAR Aquarium Survey (see Teitelbaum et al. 2013: 14). A specimen photographed at Lissenung Island, Kavieng District, 6 m depth, by Dean Tully on 15 Sept. 2012; a video of a specimen taken off Nubilus Island, off southeastern New Hanover, at 3–32 m depth, St. KR88, in 2014 (identified by Barry C. Russell).
Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 2, 4.—General distribution: India and Sri Lanka east to Hawaiian and Tuamotu islands, north to southern Japan and Ogasawara Islans, south to northern Australia and Lord Howe Island. Solitary or in pairs, in coral-rich areas of lagoon and seaward coral reefs, 0–30 m depth. Marine.
